Q. I am 70, with very fair skin – not many wrinkles and quite clear – and looking for a new foundation for the winter (so needs to be moisturising). The snag is that I have lots of freckles and don’t know whether to try to cover them or not. I don’t like heavy foundation. Can you advise?

A. Leading make-up artist Jenny Jordan (www.jennyjordan.com) is categorical: ‘Do not try to cover them’. She explains that she was on a shoot one time with a very freckly model, tried to cover her freckles and discovered that ‘when you put foundation on freckles they turn grey. It was a disaster.’

Jenny has a client with the same colouring as you and finds that a lovely option is to use Mii Illuminating Face Base SPF15/£25.50 for 25 ml from miicosmetics.com, which is an almost sheer foundation for dry fine skin. ‘It leaves the skin glowing and looking almost glossy, letting the skin tone shine through.’

It comes in five shades; the palest Gentle Glow should suit you. The bonus is that it comes with a built-in primer, which is also line blurring.

Because Mii Illuminating Face Base is so moisturising and dewy-making, Jenny suggests dusting a translucent mineral powder over the top. Mii Mineral Perfecting Pressed Powder/£23.50, which comes in one shade Feather.

Jenny also recommends bareMinerals Mineral Veil/£21 from boots.com, in four shades, and Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder SPF20/£38 (feelunique.com), in four shades too.

For blusher, Jenny advises choosing a gel blusher, such as Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blush/£20 (selfridges.com); the four tints may look a tad frightening in the pot but once applied they just give you a wash of natural colour. Cosmetics a la Carte also offers Bare Blush £28 in 16 shades, which Jenny rates highly. ‘Applying them with a brush may give you more control,’ she suggests. Jenny likes Real Techniques synthetic Tapered Blush brush/£19 from boots.com.
